Shield and Crown – an Audience Song by Rewind Fields

The Song – Shield and Crown

It felt like personal attack from the universe
Directed at this fool
Naked as I came to the foot of your door
I doubted myself for 25 years and then you cancelled my dreams
But if it’s gonna be the best
The best ever goddamn show
Bedroom boy turned mainstage man
Femininity meeting masculine
Drag is freedom, love and happiness
My art is a clown
Gonna lift up my sword, shield and crown
Forever my lover held my tender heart
And Everything I spent an eternity on
I’ll never know the boundaries of the universe
Cos I’m a bolding star
But if it’s gonna be the best
The best ever goddamn show

Bedroom boy turned mainstage man
Femininity meeting masculine
Drag is freedom, love and happiness
My art is a clown
Gonna lift up my sword, shield and crown
Parody is paramount
Humour is at the heart of it all
Evil cannot handle me
And my unapologetic love
It is gonna be the best
The best ever goddamn show

Open your heart and see
It’s all in front of me
Drag is freedom
My art is a clown
Gonna lift up my sword, shield and crown

The Story

This past lockdown, days before the biggest sell-out show I’ve ever produced. It was going to be huge. Every weekend I’d met a new person talking to me about my show.

My world, art, and passion coming to a grand halt due to reasons completely out of my control.

Losing control of my art. The inability to find CONNECTION which is what drag, my passion and my art is about. Connecting with the audience, reflecting the energy the audience gives me and projecting love, accepting your radical self.

It felt like it was a personal attack from the universe directed at this fool

I had everything lined up for the best show, a show WE NEEDED. This show was the first-ever Drag King Show in Auckland starring new and old performers. Some of the best of the best and the newest bedroom boys turned mainstage men. It was going to be explosive for our community, especially AFAB (assigned female and birth). Queers who are constantly overlooked and underrepresented in the drag and LGBTQAI+ scene.

I won’t forget the feeling when I was told we were going into lockdown. I was literally about to have sex when I got a knock on my door from my flatmate, I tried to get her to go away but she said it was important so I put on a gown. When she told me I had a breakdown like I’ve never had before. It was a Tuesday. The show was on Thursday. Everything I spent a whole year on. The lockdown was from 12am Wednesday to Friday. The universe was spiting me. My lover held me all night. I couldn’t stop crying.

Drag is FREEDOM. Free to do whatever, with whoever, wherever.

There are no boundaries, there are obstacles though. It isn’t for the faint-hearted. People are CRUEL. (Mostly other drag artists). But hey This lockdown isn’t stopping us, we are evolving, we will keep creating. Drag artists are nothing more than adult clowns, we use the same make up too. Our world is so fucking strange it’s so easy to parody and it’s paramount to have a laugh at yourself.

Art is power, love and healing. And art doesn’t constitute as colored pens and paintbrushes on a canvas. It can be whatever bring you a feeling of love and happiness, holds and heals you when you’re upset. Art is whatever makes you feel powerful. My art is my superpower.

“And my art is clown make-up I wear on my face as a shield and a sword” Monty Montgomery
